The Society for Glycobiology announced that the recipient of the 2011 Rosalind Kornfeld Award is jointly awarded to Sen-itiroh Hakomori and the AGRC Scientific Advisor, Yuan Chuan (Ed) Lee. The Rosalind Kornfeld Award for Lifetime Achievement in Glycobiology was established in 2008 to honor the distinguished scientific career and service to the Society by Dr. Rosalind Kornfeld. The award is given by the Society to scientists who have, over their professional lifetimes, made significant contributions with important impact on the field...... more
The 4th Annual Meeting of GlycoScience Ireland was held in Teagasc Food Research Centre on the 21st October, 2011. The meeting was organised by Teagasc as part of the Alimentary Glycoscience Research Cluster (AGRC) in collaboration with NUIG, NIBRT and APC.
GlycoScience Ireland is an academic organization which aims to build support for and promote Glycosciences research in Ireland and to provide visibility and collaborative opportunities for Irish glycoscientists with international academic and industrial communities.
The 4th GSI Meeting attracted a number of key sponsors (AGRC,Teagasc, NIBRT, APC, SFI, EGSF, Eurofins Foods, Agilent, Mason Technology Ltd, Waters and Europa Bioproducts Ltd.) and exhibitors and has provided a unique platform for debate and discussion between academia and industry.

The official launch of the EU Framework 7 collaborative SICA (Specific International Cooperation actions) project, entitled “GlycoHIT (Glycomics by High-throughput Integrated Technologies)” and coordinated by Professor Lokesh Joshi Director of the AGRC, was held in Hangzhou, China on April 15th 2011. The launch occurred at the start of the 1st China-EU symposium on Functional Glycoproteomics: Technology and Clinical Applications, a two day symposium which was held during the 7th meeting of the China Human Proteome Organization ( CNHUPO). Members of GlycoHIT and the Chinese consortium selected by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology as a ’sister project’ to GlycoHIT attended the symposium and presented their research work to both teams.
The symposium was also attended and addressed by Dr. Fuchu He, President of CNHUPO; Dr. Xiaoming Jin, Director General of Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology; Jun Sun, the Director of Division of European Affairs from the Department of International Cooperation, Longchao Zhou, the Deputy Director of Division of European Affairs from the Department of International Cooperation, Xiaofeng Fu, the Director of Division of Major Projects from the Department of Basic Research, Dr. Philippe Vialatte, Head of the Science, Technology and Environment Section of the European Union Delegation to China and Dr. Tomasz Dylag, Project Officer, European Commission.

The SugarBind database is a repository of all publically available sugar-binding data and a very useful resource for Glycobiologists. SugarBind was established in 2003 by the MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit US national technology resource engaged in scientific and technical activities for various government organizations. SugarBind has recently been installed and made publically available on the ExPASy portal by members of the Proteome Informatics Group of the Swiss Institute of BioInformatics (SIB) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The AGRC have received an open source license for the SugarBind database from MITRE Corporation and will contribute to its continued development in collaboration with Elaine Mullen of MITRE and members of the BioMolecular Frontiers Research Centre (BFRC) of MacQuarie University New South Wales Australia. Improvements will include addition of newly curated material, the expansion of data fields and the cross-linking to other databases maintained at SIB. Website: http://sugarbind.expasy.org/sugarbind/
